Balgair couldn’t remember ever being in such complete darkness without the comforting presence of his goddess. He strained to see beyond the tip of his boot, and when he couldn’t, he shook his head in disgust. Behind him, he could hear the muted breathing of his companions.
“Damn this darkness. Balgair, are you off the steps?” He heard Brandyn ask.
The mercenary shook his head, then remembered that nobody could see him. “Yes, I’m off the step, but I can’t see beyond my own feet.” Well, to be truthful, I can’t even see my feet. “So, when you get down here, be careful. We don’t know what’s around us.” Not to mention that I don’t want anyone to accidentally step on Heather.
He felt someone brush against him as they angled off to one side. “We wouldn’t want to step on the Captain’s bond.” Brandyn’s voice came as he took a halting step forward and snubbed his toe on something in his way.
