Love, Lore, and Line Edits: What Comes Next
Updates from the Realms of Flame, Magic, and Heart
Of Rewrites and Renewals
I’m sure this won’t come as a surprise to many of you, but as a lifelong student of Tolkien, Howard, Eddings, and Williams, I’m never completely satisfied with my earlier works.
Like Tolkien, I often feel the pull to revisit what I’ve written and make it better.
Because you’ve given me the gift of your time by reading my work, I thought it only fair to let you know what the future holds.
On Revisions
I’ll be returning to The Draoidh’s Cearcall to rewrite several chapters. As my understanding of these characters has deepened, I feel compelled to adjust how their relationships unfold.
Rhyslin & Flur
Originally, Flur was a young woman eager to learn the healing arts through the old ways. She believed the only path to that knowledge was to bond herself to Rhyslin.
That core motivation remains—but I now feel their relationship needs to develop more organically. They need time to grow in affection, to discover one another’s rhythms, and to build something real.
Rhyslin & Ria
Ria has already loved, bonded, and lost her mate. She had resigned herself to solitude, with only her daughter, Rana, for company.
When she meets Rhyslin, she doesn’t recognize him at first. His powerful prana causes her to mistake him for one of the First-Men. But as she travels alongside him, she begins to realize he’s something more—and that his connection to her late husband will bring the cearcall closer together.
Rhyslin & Rana
This is the most complex relationship of all.
Rana is living under divine prophecy. Despoina has marked her fate, and Rhyslin plays a role in it. She’s just shy of her majority, uncertain of her place in the world—and in Rhyslin’s life.
She wants everything: to be his lover, his daughter, his student. She’s nervous, conflicted, and yearning to belong. But more than anything, she wants to live fully—and be loved, without confusion.
Other Threads to Deepen
Rhyslin, Marcus, Natolie, and Rembran
Rhyslin, Marcus, and Natolie have known one another for ages. They form a narrative spine I want to strengthen. Their shared history deserves more depth—and more page time.
Rembran, meanwhile, is Rhyslin’s apprentice. A capable spell-blade, he dreams of mastering true magic and piloting the great sky-ships. His journey is just beginning.
Rembran, Ixa, and Andros
To pilot The Dawn-Breaker, Rembran must bond with Ixa and Andros—the elemental spirits that empower the ship. But both have been abused by their former master. I want this arc to unfold more realistically, with earned trust and layered tension. The current pacing moves too quickly for my liking.
All of this will probably make The Draoidh’s Cearcall longer—but I won’t know how much until I’ve finished rewriting.
The goal is simple: to make the book more immersive for all of you.
On New Stories
There are only two chapters left in Law & Order (By Law and Flame)—and I’ll be posting those within the next two weeks.
After that, I’ll begin Oath and Ember, where Rhyslin’s cearcall formally enters the story. I’ll also include a brief “bridge” explaining why his circle arrives in Eola, to help new readers jump in smoothly.
At the same time, I’ll be working on Emerald Dragon and posting updates as they’re ready.
This might mean one extra newsletter a week. If you’d prefer not to receive it, just let me know—I can adjust your subscription accordingly.
On 🤠 Thursday Roundup 🪢
The Thursday Roundup will remain a weekly digest, with ten to twelve story recs per issue.
If I don’t find ten good ones in a given week, I’ll skip that Thursday and aim for the next. This week, I came up short—so no roundup—but I’ll make it up to you next week.
Between these projects, you’ll still see smaller stories posted here and there when inspiration strikes.
Thank you again for being part of this journey.
